Most people come out to this region to eat great food, sample fine Virginia wines, enjoy the outdoors, explore art galleries and shops, and, of course, relax.  Here are some things to do nearby, listed in order of proximity to the Foster Harris House.    Many businesses in Rappahannock County are closed Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays, so please visit the available websites for up-to-date information on business hours and other details.

Wineries and Distilleries
Tasting room hours will vary seasonally, but most are open Fridays – Sundays. Visit their websites for more details.
  • Copper Fox Distillery, Sperryville.  An eight-minute drive southwest.  Maker of Wasmund’s Single Malt Whiskey.
Shopping and Galleries
R. H. Ballard Art, Rug and Home, Washington.  A three-minute walk.  Original art, hand-made rugs, fine French linens, books, accessories and more.

Packing Shed Corner,
Washington. A three-minute walk. This historic building is the home of two fine art galleries featuring regional artists, the Packing Shed Gallery and Six Pack Gallery.  It also houses Cinema Paradiso, our local movie rentals.

Geneva Welch Gallery, Washington. A three-minute walk.  Limited edition prints and original paintings as well as jewelry and hand painted scarves from other artists and designers.

Chris’s Shop of Designs in Gold & Silver, Washington. Distinctive jewelry, including wavelink design bracelets/necklaces and orbit earrings.

Inn at Little Washington Shops, Washington.  A five-minute walk.  Custom designed tableware, furnishings, gifts, antiques, jewelry, kitchenware and delicacies from the kitchen.

Peter Kramer, Cabinetmaker, Washington.  A five-minute walk.   Distinctive, museum-quality, handmade furniture.

, Washington. A five-minute walk.  Fine arts gallery exhibiting a broad range of artists, genres, and mediums.

Middle Street Gallery, Washington. A five-minute walk. Fine arts gallery exhibiting a broad range of artists, genres, and mediums.

The Farm at Sunnyside, Washington. A seven-minute drive northwest.  This farm combines ecological stewardship with agricultural production to offer the finest in local organic fruits and vegetables.  The Foster Harris House proudly uses Sunnyside organic produce in its breakfast menu.

Roy’s Orchard and Fruit Stand, Sperryville.  A seven-minute drive west.  Local fruits, vegetables, and food items.

Mount Vernon Farm Grass-Fed Meats
, Sperryville. A seven-minute drive west.  Grass-fed and finished beef, lamb, and pork.

Copper Fox Antiques, Sperryville.  A seven-minute drive west. 1930's apple packinghouse and cold storage has been converted to a large antique and furniture market. 53000 square feet of primitives, Victorian, early American and 20th century furniture tastefully on display.

Antique Tables Made Daily, Sperryville. A seven-minute drive west.  Authentic reproduction farm tables and chairs.

Longview Gallery, Sperryville.  An eight-minute drive west. Outstanding contemporary art and sculpture by local, regional, and nationally renowned artists.

Glassworks Gallery, Sperryville.  A 10-minute drive west. Handmade glass and ceramics created by professional artists.

Central Coffee Roasters,  Sperryville. A 10-minute drive west. Gourmet coffee from around the globe roasted on the premises.

Flint Hill Vintage, Flint Hill.  An 11-minute drive north.  Apple packing warehouse with antiques, art, kitchen utensils, estate furniture and more.

Entertainment and Outdoor Activities
Tour d'Epicure Virginia Cycling Adventures , Washington. Fully supported vacation packages for people who love food, wine and cycling.  For one all-inclusive price, you’ll stay at the Foster Harris House, bicycle with guides and van support and enjoy the best food and wine the region has to offer, including dinner at the Inn at Little Washington. The Theater at Washington, Washington. A five-minute walk.  Professional performances, including chamber music, jazz and drama. Visit the Theatre’s web site for the fall schedule.

RAAC Film series, Washington.  A five-minute walk. There’s nothing quite like watching a great movie from the balcony of a single screen, intimate theater.  And when was the last time you had fresh made popcorn at a movie theater for only $2.00?! Visit the RAAC web site for the fall schedule.

RAAC Studio and Gallery Tour (November 1 – 2, 2008), Washington.  The tour begins at the Fire Hall here in town where you’ll be able to view representative artwork from 16 studios and 8 galleries and pick up a map with driving directions to all the locations.  A fantastic way to see the Rappahannock countryside while enjoying the paintings, sculpture, pottery, glassworks, forged ironwork, jewelry, textiles, and photography of more than 50 local artists.

Christmas in Little Washington (December 6, 2009), Washington. Welcome the holidays with our small-town parade and festival. Shop for gifts at the Artisans Market where more than 30 local artists, craftspeople, and specialty food and wine vendors will display their wares. After the parade, Santa will be on hand to hear the wishes of children whispered in his ear. There’ll be a magic show, a choral concert, and more.  A great way to enjoy the simple pleasures of the season.

Rappahannock Historical Society and Museum, Washington. A five-minute walk.  Visit this non-profit museum to learn more about the history of Rappahannock County and its people.  The gift shop features historical maps, memorabilia and Rappahannock-made products. Open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11am – 5pm.

Skyline Drive
, Thornton Gap Entrance, Sperryville.  A 20-minute drive west.
Hike, bike or drive to enjoy breathtaking views in this state park on the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Marriott Ranch Trail Rides, Hume.  A 20-minute drive north.  Guided horseback riding tours on a 4200 acre working cattle ranch. 

Luray Caverns
, Luray.  A 30-minute drive west.  Spectacular natural formations in cathedral-sized caves.  Ticket price includes admission to the antique car and carriage museum on the same property.
